Last weekend, four married men (John, Jason, Denden & I - minus our wives) went on a trip to Sagada. It was a never-ending (and freezing) 9-hour trip from Manila to Banawe via Autobus (with a few stop-overs every now and then). It was then followed by an unforgiving 3-hour journey (about 70% on rough road) to Sagada.
There are no carbon monoxide-coughing jeepneys, towering hotels nor an SM Mall (but I won’t be surprised if they build one in the future), but John and I agreed that it’s very much like Baguio… the atmosphere, the scenery, the people …
We spent Day 1 walking. Right after lunch (fantastic Lechon Kawali from Maferet’s(?) Resto), we decided to go to one of the burial caves. We first went to the Municipal Hall where we registered and hired a guide. Then, a 40+ minute walk from the Municipal Hall to the cave.Â
It was a sight to behold. Inside this very small cave are small coffins stacked on top of each other. I saw this exact scene before, but only on Discovery Channel. Now it’s for real. Hundreds of hanging coffins. So historical …. so Filipino … but sadly, right in front of us is an age-old Igorot culture that no longer exists.
Here are some pix taken that day:

Denden’s postcard-shot of the Banawe Rice Terraces.

This is the 2nd floor of our “unit” in St. Joseph’s.

John & Jason checking Maferet’s (?) menu.

This is Denden.

On our way to the burial cave, John looking calm and easy.

Obviously, something caught Jason’s interest.

All of us have bad luck and good luck. The man who persists through the bad luck - who keeps right on going - is the man who is there when the good luck comes - and is ready to receive it.
